Does your child suffer from an allergy to pollen?
If your child has a headache, dry cough, runny eyes and nose-It could be an allergy to pollen. Even some of these symptoms could indicate an allergy.  Consult your Pediatrician and start them on a preventative medication like Claritin, Zyrtec etc.  Virginia has a high pollen count.  Even people with no history of allergies, will often become sensitive to the pollens.  To avoid discomfort and secondary infections, a good preventative is the best course of action.
Is it the flu or a cold?
Flu- Fever (100-104 lasting 3-4 days), headache, aches and pains, weakness and fatigue (2-3 wks), extreme exhaustion, cough.Complications-Bronchitis, Pneumonia.

Cold- Rare fever, Rare headache, minor aches, mild fatigue, no extreme exhaustion, stuffy nose, sore throat, mild cough. Complications-Sinus congestion, Earache.

Prevention- Cough/sneeze into your sleeve or a tissue. Throw tissue away. Washing hands with soap and water thoroughly.  Use hand sanitizer if unable to wash. Stay home from work/school for 5-7 days if you have flu-like symptoms.

Treatment- Humidify and hydrate-Use humidifiers for moist air and drink plenty of fluids. Get plenty of rest. Gargle with warm salt water for sore throats. Try saline drops or mist for nasal congestion. OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or ibuprofen help with body aches, sore throat pain and headache.  Never use aspirin for children and teens. Honey soothes the throat and Lemon helps loosen phlegm. Seek medical attention if symptoms continue beyond a week, or if you experience secondary infection symptoms.
